Being Green
Green business is simple. A Green business is one that adopts principles, policies, and practices that improve the quality of life for their customers, their employees, communities, and the environment.
ECOSLO’s Green Pages is a directory of county businesses which have met a set of important but reasonable criteria in the areas of smart energy, water use, recycling, sourcing, transportation, waste disposal, choice of products, and service delivery methods.
What is the Green Pages Eco-audit?
The Eco-Audit is your business’s application/criteria to become a member of the ECOSLO Green Pages. In order to qualify as a member, your business must demonstrate a commitment to enhancing the local environment and community by meeting a minimum number of criteria in each area of the Eco-Audit. Meeting the minimum requirements is easy because there are a number of ways to satisfy the minimum requirements in each area.
This might look like a long list to a business manager. But, it doesn’t take too much research and reflection on this issue to understand that all of the criteria are opportunities to operate a business more efficiently and effectively. More and more managers are realizing that it makes good sense to go green and it’s easier to than you might think.
Many changes are simple and save money. Take something as simple as lighting. Exchanging inefficient incandescent light bulbs for efficient compact florescent bulbs can save up to 30% per year in lighting energy expenses. The energy saved will create less demand on power plants some of which may be burning coal, polluting the air and contributing to global warming.
The ECOSLO Green Pages goal is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, businesses and the marketplace—to create an environmentally sustainable economy in San Luis Obispo county.
